Blonding

blonding

In the hair business, blonding is a general term that refers to the entire process of lightening hair to achieve various shades of blonde.

It’s not just a single product or technique; it’s a specialized, multi-step service that can be customized to create anything from subtle, sun-kissed looks to bold, all-over platinum.

Here are the key aspects of what “blonding” involves:

1. The Process

  • Lifting/Lightening: This is the first step, where a lightener (bleach) is used to lift the natural or existing color out of the hair. The goal is to safely lift the color to the desired level of lightness.
  • Toning/Glazing: After lifting, a toner (or gloss/glaze) is almost always applied. The toner is what refines the blonde shade. It neutralizes unwanted warm or “brassy” tones (like yellow or orange) and gives the hair its final, perfect hue, such as icy, ash, beige, or honey blonde.

2. Common Blonding Techniques

Blonding is achieved through various techniques, depending on the desired look and maintenance level:

  • Highlights (Foiling): Using foils to isolate and lighten strands from the roots to the ends for a more uniform, consistent, and brighter result.
    • Includes: Babylights (very fine, natural-looking highlights) and Traditional Highlights (standard-width sections).
  • Balayage: A freehand painting technique that creates soft, blended, and natural-looking highlights, typically darker at the roots and gradually lighter towards the ends. It’s often lower maintenance.
  • Foilyage: A hybrid of balayage and foiling. The lightener is painted on like balayage, but the sections are then wrapped in foil to achieve more lift and brightness than traditional balayage.
  • Full Blonding/All-Over Bleach: Lightening the entire head of hair to achieve a solid, single shade of very light blonde (like platinum or white blonde).

3. Key Services

  • Dimensional Blonding: Using a combination of light pieces (highlights) and darker pieces (lowlights or the natural base) to create depth, movement, and a more natural appearance.
  • Color Correction: Often needed when a client’s blonde has turned brassy, uneven, or when a significant change in lightness is required over previously colored hair.

In essence, blonding encompasses the art and science of creating the perfect, healthy blonde color tailored to the client’s skin tone, hair health, and maintenance preferences.
